Athena offers three variations of the basic nutrient-rich LB Broth media (Miller, Lennox, and Luria) as well as their APF Certified™ equivalents made using Athena’s proprietary blended plant protein hydrolysate: Atholate™. The formulations each provide an abundance of peptides and peptones, vitamins and trace elements, and differ only in sodium chloride content and whether they were made with casein hydrolysate or Atholate™. The differences allow the researcher to select which formula will provide the ideal osmotic conditions for their particular bacterial strain and desired culture conditions. Each LB Broth and APF LB Broth can be custom ordered in bulk.

Luria Broth with Agar, Carbenicillin, and Cycloheximide is a selective and non-differential medium recommended for the cultivation of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli. It was developed in the early 1950's to support bacterial and phage studies. It has since become a cornerstone of molecular biology, especially for growing E. coli in DNA cloning, plasmid preparation, and protein expression applications. Luria Broth (low salt) contains 0.5g/mL of sodium chloride, compared to 5.0g/L in LB Agar, Lennox and 10.0g/L in LB Agar, Miller.• Luria Broth with Agar should be used by trained professionals within a laboratory setting. • Product is not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of disease or other human conditions.

Thomas Scientific Sporulation Broth, 500 g
Sporulation Broth was originally developed by Arret and Kirshbaum for the detection of antibiotic residues in milk and milk products (1). The medium is specified for the preparation of spores, by APHA, for disc assay procedure for the detection of sulfa drugs and antibiotics in milk (2). Peptic digest of animal tissue and beef extract provide nitrogen, sulphur and amino acids and essential trace ingredients. Yeast extract is a rich source of vitamin B; dextrose is the energy source. Suspensions containing large numbers of bacterial spores are obtained using Sporulation Broth. A fresh slant culture of Bacillus subtilis is washed with sterile physiological saline onto the surface of Roux bottles containing 300 ml sterile medium. The bottles are incubated at 35°C for 5 days and the resulting growth is suspended into 50 ml of sterile physiological saline. Mannitol Salt Agar is a medium used for isolating and differentiating both pathogenic and non-pathogenic Staphylococci. The high concentration of Sodium Chloride makes this medium selective for Gram-positive bacteria. D-Mannitol is the carbohydrate source, while Beef Extract and the enzymatic digest of Casein and Animal Tissue supply amino acids, peptides, and other nitrogenous sources. On this medium, Staphylococcus aureus strains produce large yellow colonies surrounded by yellow zones while non-pathogenic, mannitol-fermenting Staphylococci form smaller, red colonies due to the color shift of the pH indicator Phenol Red.

Barney Miller Agar is used for the detection and enumeration of beer spoilage microorganisms such as Lactobacillus and Pediococcus spp. This medium was developed by Barney, Kot, and Chicoye at the Miller Brewing Company to detect the presence of lactic acid bacteria. This group of organisms is extremely tolerant to the inhospitable conditions that are a direct result of the brewing process. Tomato Juice Extract, Dipeptone and Beef Extract provide nitrogenous sources, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins to optimize bacterial growth. Maltose and Dextrose are the fermentable carbohydrates. Potassium Acetate and L-Malic Acid make the medium selective and L-Cystein, HCl serves as reducing agent and growth stimulant. The detergent Tween 80 acts as surfactant.
